My name is Benedicta Onyenwosa, I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in Aging and Health at Queen’s University, after the completion of a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Psychology. Having spent the last ten years working in the social senior health care field, helping seniors living a comfortable and enjoyable life in long-care service and assisted living homes, I’ve come to the realization that my passion lies in helping seniors live a happier life no matter their medical health condition. I have worked with individuals with different range of illness and disability: – bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, dementia and Alzheimer’s and challenging behavior. This gave me great insight in wanting to step into the role of a health promoter in the area of Happiness in health and aging.
I have been involved in multi-disciplinary care reviews, helping service users to determine their present needs and wishes and identifying future goals and desired outcomes on an ongoing basis, whilst promoting empowerment, individuality, rights, responsibilities, identity and self-esteem. I also provided continuous emotional support on a daily basis and during stressful life changes. As a result I became more aware of my own values and beliefs whilst showing respect for all persons and their values, beliefs, cultures, goals, needs and preferences.
